On Thursday, January 21, NEMJDS Spelling Bee Champion Eli Brook won the Private School District Spelling Bee, thereby securing a spot in the forthcoming Jefferson County Spelling Bee. Brook, a sixth grader, won the contest by correctly spelling the word “scrapple.”  Brook, a previous School Spelling Bee Champion, said, “I like participating in the Spelling Sees because it’s a challenge, and the school has such a legacy with spellers, I would like to live up to that legacy.”
NEMJDS students are no strangers to Spelling Bee titles as several students have had past wins in district and county Bees. Spelling Bee supervisor Annette Troxell says, “Eli worked individually and diligently to win both Bees.”
This year’s Private School Bee was unique in that unlike the normal excitement of appearance before a live audience, the students had to perform virtually.  With support from the Landy family, the NEMJDS is able to continue having students participate in these Spelling Bees, a highlight of the school year.
We are very proud of our new Spelling Bee Champ Eli!
