Shapes, lines, texture, colors. In Kindergarten, we have covered a lot of these elements of art! Our latest project was to paint the wolf (heard in the musical composition “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev that we studied in music class). We learned how to dip our paintbrushes in two different colors to obtain a mix. This technique is called double-loading. We used it to give texture to our hairy wolves! Then we splashed our wolves with white paint to make the snow on the wolves…and a bit everywhere else!
First graders discovered the world of Jeff Koons, a contemporary artist, and made their own balloon dogs by using highlights and shading on their oval shapes. The process was long but the results are amazing.
Second and third graders also continued their discovery of contemporary artists and were inspired by Jasper Johns and his love of numbers. We used a print technique for this, and added shades to have our numbers appear 3-D.
In 4th and 5th grade, we dove into graffiti and tags, the difference between the two techniques, and street art. We drew our names, added symbols and we will eventually make a wall.
Our 6th, 7th and 8th grade artists made their own marble papers in December (quite an adventure) in order to make their own origami books. The process was fun, extremely messy and the results amazing.
All grades are helping to decorate our Tu B’shevat tree, in coordination with the Judaics team. Stay tuned!
